Songs for Diane: A Collection

For the women who crossed oceans to bring me here – my mother, my grandmothers, and my great grandmothers. They are my yaad. Every written piece is homage to them. They are the thesis of my prayers.

Songs for Diane is a poetry collection that emerged from a poetry capstone seminar during my senior year at the University of Toronto.

What I had initially conceptualized as 21st century retellings of Shakespeare’s women became poems that centred on identity, diaspora, womanhood, family, and immigration. The poems are divided according to how each Shakespearean woman connects to the themes.
